Beaches in Cyprus - Our Top 10 Selection

The majority of people who take a holiday in Cyprus, will want to spend some time on one of the lovely beaches. Most beaches have the benefit of a lifeguard service during the main holiday season and areas for safe swimming are marked out with coloured buoys. You may even find first aid facilities available at some of the beaches, whilst showering facilities are common on most of them. Some hotels have direct access to adjacent beaches, and can have stretches of beach allocated to them.

As for deciding which of the many beaches in Cyprus to visit, we have set out below our top 10 [in no particular order].

Ayia Napa - Nissi Beach : Perhaps one of the most famous beaches in Cyprus, Nissi Beach is popular with the younger visitor and can be alive with loud music. Due to its popularity, you can expect it to be busy especially during the main holiday season. With crystal clear waters [although during peak periods some green seaweed can be present], and generally calm water it is ideal for swimming and for taking part in the watersports available.

Ayia Napa - Makronissos Beach : For a quieter beach in this lively resort, head to Makronissos Beach where you will find calm waters and very little noise. Walk along the soft sand and take a dip into the crystal clear water.

Coral Bay : If it's soft sand and a tropical atmosphere you are after then Coral Bay is the beach for you. Located on the west coast of Cyprus, the sea is safe for family swimming and there are rows and rows of sunbeds for hire. Watersports are also available and during the evenings the beach is a popular location for pop concerts during the summer.

Blue Lagoon - Latchi : Although not an easily accessible bay, we could not miss this off our list. A short boat ride will take you to the Laguna Blu where you will find stunning, clear water ideal for swimming for all the family. Take your snorkelling gear with you as there's plenty of fish to look at. Lot of people hire a boat from the Latchi Watersports to reach this beauty spot.

Protaras : Fig Tree Bay in Paralimni is a popular attraction due to is clear blue sea and soft sand. Take a walk along the promenade and enjoy a drink in one of the local tavernas. The water is safe for children and there are plenty of sunbeds and parasols for hire.

Limassol - Lady Mile Beach : A long, sandy and relatively quiet stretch of beach with clean, clear water. One of the most popular features of this beach is the lack of nearby buildings, adding to the atmosphere - although it does tend to get crowded at the weekends.

Pissouri Beach : Some 27 miles from Limassol, Pissouri Beach is a favourite with families as there are lots of sunbeds, parasols, tavernas and places to eat. The beach can be pebbly, but is sandy at the water's edge. If you are arriving by car, there are good parking facilities. You can expect the beach to be breezy from time-to-time, but this results in good windsurfing facilities.

Lara : There are two sandy beaches located here. The first is is 2km of relatively uncrowded sand and the other a half-moon stretch of sand frequented by sea turtles. In fact, here is where you will find the Lara Bay Turtle Conservation Project. During the main summer months, night walks are arranged by the Project when you might be able to see turtles coming ashore.

St George's Beach - Paphos : If you enjoy snorkelling, then you can't go wrong here. Although there is no real beach to speak of, the sea is ideal for snorkelling and a wonderful place to swim in the warm water [although be aware that the sea suddenly becomes quite deep]. There's quite a few rocks and kite flying is popular with the locals due to the constant breeze.

Polis : Reportedly, some of the loveliest beaches on the island can be found here including a long stretch of sand and pebble beach along Chrysochou Bay found 15 minutes from the centre of Polis [15 minutes walk].

So whether its soft sand, crystal clear waters, snorkelling, watersports, music, peace and quiet, palm-shaded or rocky outlets you are looking for, there is a beach to suit everyone on holiday in Cyprus.
